Description

This is a fine George III Sterling Silver Teaspoon in the classic Old English pattern. The initials S I E are neatly engraved at the top of the stem in the style typical of this period.

The spoon is made in London by the famous Hester Bateman and dates to 1783. Hester Bateman is probably the best known of all female English silversmiths. She started her business around 1760 and by her retirement in 1790, Bateman\'s had become by far the most successful silver flatware supplier in England and would remain so well into the 19th century.

Condition is good with no dings or dents to the spoon and just a small amount of wear to the tip, caused by stirring many cups of tea for over 230 years! Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The teaspoon is 12cm / 4.75ins long and weighs 10.8g / 0.38oz.

The hallmarks are quite rubbed and don\'t photograph terribly well but can be made out with a magnifier. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter h for 1783 and the distinctive HB makers\' mark for Hester Bateman.
