Description

This is a very good quality late Victorian Sterling Silver small Planter or Cachepot. The planter is formed as four lobes rising from a circular base and has beaded decoration all around the top rim. It makes a very attractive piece that will hold a small flowerpot and would look beautiful with a flowering plant inside sitting on a dressing table or as a centrepiece on a small dining table.

The planter is made in London by Horace Woodward & Co Ltd in 1900 and retailed by Pearce & Sons, a famous retail jeweller and silversmith with stores in Leeds, Leicester and Huddersfield. Horace Woodward & Co Ltd were in business in Birmingham and in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district between 1866 and around 1920. As well as their own store, they made items for many famous retailers including Harrods, Liberty and in this case Pearce & Sons of Leeds.

Condition is very good with just two tiny dings in the base that can't be seen when the planter is in use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The planter is 10cm / 4ins across the top, 6.3cm / 2.5ins across the base and stands 7.9cm / 3.1ins high. It weighs a very substantial 93.8g / 3.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the side of the planter are slightly rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter e for 1900 and the H W & Co Ld in a quatrefoil makers' mark for Horace Woodward & Co Ltd. The underside of the base is stamped with the retail mark for Pearce & Sons Leeds and the registered design no 338840 which dates the design of the piece to 1899/1900.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the planter.
