Description

Here we have a top quality large Edwardian Sterling Silver Pig Pin Cushion. The pig is beautifully modelled and holds a refurbished blue velvet cushion. Antique pin cushions are highly collectable and this one is from the top drawer.

The pin cushion was made in Birmingham in 1903 by renowned silversmiths Levi & Salaman and retailed by Mappin & Webb, most probably in their prestigious London store. Levi & Salaman are widely regarded as one of the best makers of silver pin cushions. The company was founded in Birmingham in 1870 by Phineas Harris Levi and Joseph Wolff Salaman and remained in business up until 1921. They specialised in making very high quality small items for personal use.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 120 years of use. The pig stands securely on its four trotters without rocking. As mentioned above, the cushion has been refurbished at some point and is consequently in excellent condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pig is of substantial size, measuring 10.6cm / 4.2ins from snout to tail, 3.2cm / 1.25ins in width and 6.3cm / 2.5ins in height. It weighs 81.6g / 2.88oz but this does of course include the cushion.

The hallmarks on the side of the pig\'s body are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the L&S makers\' mark for Levi & Salaman. In addition it bears the retail stamp for Mappin & Webb Ltd.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the pin cushion.
