Description

This is a nice set of three George VI Sterling Silver "Fancy Back" Teaspoons in the Hanoverian pattern. The spoons are plain Hanoverian from the front but the backs of the bowls are charmingly decorated with a basket of flowers, a scroll and foliate design and a scallop shell.

The teaspoons were made in Sheffield in 1946 by Thomas Bradbury & Sons and then imported to Ireland via Dublin in 1950 and as such have two sets of hallmarks on each spoon. Thomas Bradbury & Sons are well-known Sheffield silversmiths who were founded back in the early 1830s and remained in business up until the early 1950s.

The teaspoons are perfectly usable today or, particularly with the double hallmark, would make a good addition to a collection.

Condition is good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after many years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 10.9cm / 4.25" long and the set of 3 weighs in at 38.4g / 1.35oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stems are clear to read. The first set show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "D" for 1946 and the TB & S in a shield makers' mark for Thomas Bradbury & Sons. The second set show the 925 stamp for Sterling Silver, the Dublin import assay mark and the date letter "I" for 1950.
