William IV Floral "Berry" Spoon, London, 1831
Description
Here we have a very decorative William IV Sterling Silver Spoon with embossed and engraved floral decoration. The spoon is in the traditional Old English pattern which has then been decorated with floral engraving down the stem and an embossed floral design in the bowl which has also had the edge crimped. It makes a very attractive spoon. The spoon was originally made in London in 1831, most probably by William Esterbrook, a specialist spoon maker of the time. It is possible that he also added the decoration but it is more likely that this was done a few years later as the fashion for these "berry" spoons (so called because the decoration is frequently a design of assorted berries) really began in the 1840s and early 1850s.
Condition is good with no dings or dents and only the minimal surface wear that has to be expected after 190 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 13.4cm / 5.25" long and weighs a very respectable 15.7g / 0.55oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are well struck and clear to read with the exception of the makers' mark, which is somewhat rubbed but still decipherable. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "q" for 1831, the George III duty mark (although William IV was King in 1831 his duty mark wasn't introduced until 1834) and the WE makers' mark, which is most probably for specialist spoon maker William Esterbrook, although a number of different silversmiths had similar marks around this time.
