Description

This is a very stylish cased set of 6 Mid-Century Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons in a Modernist design. The spoons have small round bowls, slender stems and a distinctive chevron pattern at the upper end that is a post-war modernist twist on an Art Deco motif.

The coffee spoons are made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths Walker & Hall and date to 1955. Walker & Hall are one of the great names in English silver. Founded by George Walker and Henry Hall in 1853 they had a factory in Sheffield and prestigious showrooms in London's Holborn Viaduct. There were branches in all the major British cities and also in Australia and South Africa. In 1963 they were absorbed into British Silverware Ltd alongside Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co.

Condition of the spoons is very good with no dings, dents or damage and just the minimum of surface wear that has to be expected after 65 years. The box is also in good condition with smooth hinges and a secure clasp. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 8.8cm / 3.5" long and the set of 6 (unboxed) weighs a respectable total of 33.8g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the bowls are all clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "N" for 1955 and the W & H makers' mark for Walker & Hall.
