Description

This is a very decorative pair of George V Sterling Silver small Nut Dishes or Bonbon Dishes with pierced sides. The dishes are made in Birmingham by Henry Matthews and date to 1928. Henry Matthews ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in the heart of Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter from 1893 to around 1930, so these dishes are from towards the end of his career. He made a wide range of items of consistently high quality.

The pair of dishes are oval navette shaped with raised ends. The upper rim is decorated with shells and scrolls whilst the sides of the body are pierced with elongated "S" shapes and small diagonal square crosses. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. They remain ideal for serving small quantities of nuts or snacks but would do equally well as trinket dishes on a dressing table.

Condition is good with just a couple of very small dings around the rim of the base, which are not really noticeable when in use. The pierced sides are in very good condition with no damage or splits. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each dish is 9.7cm / 3.75" long, 6.3cm / 2.5" wide and 3.1cm / 1.25" tall at the their highest point. The pair together weighs a very respectable 30.9g / 1.09oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the side of each dish are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "D" for 1928 and the H M is separate squares makers' mark for Henry Matthews.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery parcel post, which includes cover for the value of the dishes.
