Description

Here we have a very elegant late Victorian Sterling Silver pierced oblong dish. The dish is made by well known silversmiths James Deakin & Sons Ltd in Sheffield and dates to 1900. James Deakin founded the company in 1866, being joined by eldest son William in 1878 and two further sons John & Albert in 1886 at which point they became known as James Deakin & Sons. The family firm ceased trading in the mid-1930s although the name was bought and sold a number of times in the years that followed.

This is a superb quality Victorian silver dish made in a good gauge of silver. There is a narrow flat base with exquisite pierced decoration rising above it to a flat rim with a gadrooned edge. There is a blank cartouche in the middle of the piercing on each of the long sides. It is a beautiful decorative piece in its own right or would be great filled with either wrapped sweets or pot pourri. It's a very versatile dish.

Condition is extremely good with no dings, dents, misshaping or splits. The pierced area has no damage and overall there is only the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dish is 18cm / 7.1" long, 12.5cm / 5" wide and stands 2.2cm / 0.8" high. It weighs a substantial 161.6g / 5.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the upper side of the flat rim are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "h" for 1900 and the JD over WD makers mark for James & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the dish.
