This is a lovely late Victorian Sterling Silver Drum style Mustard Pot with its original blue glass liner. The mustard pot is made by Atkin Brothers in Sheffield and dates to 1898. The Atkin Brothers, under the leadership of eldest brother Harry and then his son Harry Jr, were in business from the 1850s to the 1950s, although the firm could trace its origins as far back as the 1750s. They principally made good quality tableware and flatware in both Sterling Silver and silver plate.

The very earliest English mustard pots appeared in the 1760s and were almost universally in the drum style. As the 18th & 19th centuries progressed a variety of different designs developed and then in the late 1800s the drum style came back into fashion, although the pots were significantly smaller than the Georgian originals. Although late Victorian in date, this pot is a conscious reproduction of those earliest styles. It is a perfectly usable piece that would look great on any dining table today.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the minimal surface wear you would expect after over 120 years of service. The blue glass liner is original and in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The mustard pot is 4.6cm / 1.8" in diameter and stands 6.2cm / 2.5" high. Without the blue glass liner, it weighs a very respectable 50.2g / 1.77oz of solid Sterling Silver. With the liner in it weighs 89.6g / 3.16oz.

The hallmarks on the underside of the base are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the gothic date letter "f" for 1898 and the HA makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers. In addition, the inside of the lid is marked with the lion passant for Sterling Silver and the HA makers' mark.
