Description
This is a superb set of Japanese 950 grade Silver Salt & Pepper shakers dating to around the 1930s. The shakers are in the form of traditional Japanese coaches, are beautifully decorated with flowers and wonderfully detailed. The wheels on each coach are fully working.Historically Japan had very little silver and this lead to them specialising in miniature pieces which show a very high degree of craftsmanship and are greatly valued. The silver grade is also usually very high.
These salt & pepper shakers are a good example with great attention to detail and are made in 950 / 1000 grade silver. There is a small sliding door on the bottom of each coach which is used for filling with table salt or fine ground pepper. The shaker holes are at the back of each coach, one with slightly larger holes for table salt and the other with smaller holes for ground pepper. They are in full working order and would make a great talking point on any dining table as well as being highly decorative.
Each coach is 3cm / 1.1" long, 2cm / 0.8" wide and 3.7cm / 1.5" to the ridge of the roof. The shafts are 6.8cm / 2.6" long. The pair together weigh in at a substantial 45.3g / 1.6oz of solid silver.
Each coach is stamped STERLING 950 on the sliding door on the underside. In Japan, Sterling refers to anything which is 925 grade or higher and is accompanied by the stamp showing the exact grade, in this case 950 / 1000 or 95% silver.
