Description

Here we have an unusual and very stylish George V Glass and Sterling Silver Stamp Holder. The holder is oblong with a flat hinged lid on one side which opens to reveal two trays for stamps. The other side has a rectangular bath which would have held a damp sponge for moistening the adhesive on your stamps.

The stamp holder was made in Birmingham by noted silversmith Henry Clifford Davis and dates to 1913. Founded in 1901 in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, Henry Clifford Davis produced a wide range of silverware from small personal items such as manicure sets and sewing kits up to large tea and coffee sets, candlesticks and candelabra. They became H.C. Davis Ltd in the early 1930s and remained in business into the 1960s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver, no chips or cracks in the glass and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The stamp holder is 9.5cm / 3.7ins long by 6.5cm / 2.5ins wide and stands 2.3cm / 0.9ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 280.3g / 9.9oz.

The hallmarks, down one side of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter o for 1913 and the H.C.D makers' mark for Henry Clifford Davis.

Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the stamp holder.
