Description

Here we have a handsome Georgian Brass Apothecary's Pestle and Mortar from the late 18th century. The mortar is bucket shaped with a flat circular foot and a spreading rim. The pestle is in the traditional double ended shape.

As is usually the case, there is no makers' mark on the pestle and mortar, so we cannot say who made it. We can say it is British and dates to around the 1770s to 1800s.

Condition is interesting as there has been a very old repair made to the side of the mortar where many years of grinding had worn a hole in the side wall which has now been patched. Clearly this was a valued and useful tool that the owner wanted to carry on using. It remains perfectly usable today or would make a striking decorative piece for any kitchen. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The mortar stands 9.6cm / 3.8ins high and is 13cm / 5.1ins in diameter across the top rim. The pestle is 18.5cm / 7.3ins long. Together they weigh in at 1.07kg / 37.8oz.
