Victorian Silver Mounted Claret Jug, B'ham, 1898

Description
Here we have a superb late Victorian Cut Glass and Sterling Silver Claret Jug. The pear shaped jug has deep cut floral engraving around the lower part of the body and a star cut base. The collar, lip and handle are engraved with scrolling decoration and there is swag decoration on the domed lid. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The claret jug was made in Birmingham by W.H. Lyde / George Unite & Sons and dates to 1898. William Henry (Harry) Lyde originally established himself as an electroplater in Birmingham in the early 1880s and then registered a Sterling Silver mark in 1886. In 1897 he took over ownership of the famous silversmiths George Unite & Sons, which in 1928 briefly became George Unite & Sons & Lyde Ltd before they ceased trading by 1930.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of good service. There is a little bit of give in the hinge of the lid but it remains securely attached. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The claret jug stands 25cm / 9.8ins high, is 10.3cm / 4ins from lip to handle and 10.9cm / 4.3ins across at its broadest point. It weighs 855g / 30oz.
The hallmarks, high up on the collar, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter y for 1898 and the W.H.L makers' mark for William Henry Lyde / George Unite & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £18.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the weight and value of the claret jug.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
