Here we have a high quality George III Sterling Silver Large Basting Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The spoon has the initials J E over A M C engraved at the top of the stem and the date 1804 on the underside, suggesting this was possibly a wedding gift.

The basting spoon was made in London by silversmiths Peter & Ann Bateman and dates to 1793, so it was obviously engraved a few years later, which was not uncommon. The Bateman mark has been partially overstruck by that of William Williams II, who was active around the time of the engraving and probably responsible for it.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 230 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The basting spoon is of substantial size at 30.5cm / 12ins in length and 5.5cm / 2.2ins wide across the bowl. It weighs in at a very respectable 93.5g / 3.3oz / 3toz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter s for 1793, the George III duty mark and the P B over A B makers' mark for Peter & Ann Bateman which is partially overstruck by the W.W makers' mark for William Williams II.
