Description

Here we have an exquisite, high quality Victorian Sterling Silver Communion Set. The set comprises a chalice and a paten. The chalice has a circular base with the IHS monogram, a knopped stem and a band of geometric decoration around the bowl. The interior is gilded. The paten is circular with the IHS monogram in the middle and four celtic style crosses at the compass points.

The set was made in London by renowned ecclesiastical suppliers Cox & Sons and dates to 1877. The firm was founded by Thomas Cox in 1838, initially as ecclesiastical tailors. They became Cox & Sons in 1853 and the firm expanded to be suppliers of stained glass, ecclesiastical furniture, statuary and church supplies in general. They were based in Southampton Street in London’s Covent Garden district. The company was bought in 1880 and again in the mid-1890s but continued to trade until around 1935.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 150 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The chalice is 9.5cm / 3.75ins high and 5.7cm / 2.25ins in diameter, whilst the paten is 8.9cm / 3.5ins in diameter. The set weighs in at a substantial 143.5g / 5oz / 4.6toz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the bowl of the chalice and the underside of the paten are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter B for 1877, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the T C over E C makers' mark for Thomas Cox and Edward Cox of Cox & Sons. The paten also has the retail stamp for Cox & Sons, Southampton Street, London.

Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the communion set.
