Description

Here we have a charming Cased Set of Six Edwardian Sterling Silver Buttons. The buttons are circular and have an embossed design of the "Reynolds' Angels", a detail from a famous painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds that was often used as a decorative motif in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The case has a black leather outer cover, a cream satin lining in the lid and a blue velvet tray holding the buttons.

The set of buttons was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Adie & Lovekin and dates to 1904. Founded in 1863 by James Adie and Alfred Lovekin, the firm specialised in flatware, fancy goods, silver jewellery and particularly sewing related items. Their pin cushions are highly collectable. The original partners passed away in 1913 and 1912 and the firm carried on until around 1930.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 120 years of use. The satin lining in the lid of the box is somewhat frayed but still intact and there is some scuffing to the outside of the base. The hinges and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each button is 2.1cm in diameter and the set of six together weighs in at 13.2g of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the fronts of the buttons, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter e for 1904 and the A L Ld makers' marks for Adie & Lovekin Ltd.

Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the buttons.
