Edwardian Silver Spoons & Tongs Set, Elkington

Description
Here we have a very attractive Cased Edwardian Sterling Silver Set of Six Coffee Spoons and matching Sugar Tongs. The heavyweight spoons and tongs are in a bamboo pattern, typical of oriental influences in the Aesthetic style. The scalloped box has a cream satin lining in the lid with the Elkington & Co name in gold and a purple velvet tray to hold the items. The set was made in Birmingham by famous silversmiths Elkington & Co and date to 1904/5. Elkington & Co are one of the great names of English silverware. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, they took out the world's first silver electroplating patent in 1838 and this is what they are best known for. However they always continued to produce very high quality Sterling Silver alongside their silver plate. The company was merged into British Silverware with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb in 1963.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. The box is in good condition with just a few minor scuffs. The hinges and clasp are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 10.3cm / 4ins long and the sugar tongs are 10.5cm / 4.1ins long. All together, unboxed, the set weighs in at a substantial 108.4g / 3.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems and inside one arm of the tongs, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham the date letter e for 1904 or f for 1905 and the E & Co Ld makers' mark for Elkington &Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
