Description

This is a smart George V Sterling Silver Draughtsman's Pencil. The holder is plain and of flattened form. The lid pulls off and holds the bottom end of the pencil. This can then be fitted into the top of the holder to make a longer pencil if desired. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The pencil holder was made in London by John H Hill and dates to 1919. John Henry Hill was active in London from around 1910 to around 1930. He produced small items for personal use, desk items, smoking accessories and napkin rings, all of consistently good quality.

Condition is good with just a shallow bruise to the top of the holder plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 105 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pencil holder is 9.4cm / 3.7ins long when closed and 1.1cm / 0.43ins wide. Including the current pencil is 14.1cm / 5.5ins long. Without the pencil it weighs in at 10.5g / 0.37oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter d for 1919 and the J H makers' mark for John H Hill.
