Description

Here we have a good quality Edwardian Glass and Sterling Silver Lucifer or Match Striker. The lucifer is spherical with a flat base. The lower half of the body is ribbed to strike matches on and the upper part is covered by a deep silver collar with engraved acanthus leaf decoration around a blank cartouche at the front. There is a central well to hold the matches.

The lucifer was made in Birmingham by or for Louis Adler and dates to 1908. Louis Adler was active in the early years of the 20th century. Primarily a tobacconist his mark is seen on silver mounts on pipes, cigarette holders, vesta cases, matchbox covers and lucifers throughout the Edwardian era.

Condition is fair, with just one little nibble out of the glass base and a few small dings in the silver around the opening of the match holder plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all of the photographs.

The lucifer is 5.4cm / 2.1ins in diameter and stands 5.1cm / 2ins high. It weighs 239.6g / 8.4oz.

The hallmarks, to the left of the cartouche, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham the date letter i for 1908 and the L A sponsors' mark for Louis Adler.
