Description

This is a charming and practical George V Sterling Silver Needle Case. The case is cylindrical with a pull off lid and a loop at the other end for attaching it to a chatelaine or sewing basket. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The needle case was made in Birmingham by Francis Webb Ltd and dates to 1915. Francis Webb established his firm in Birmingham in 1887, becoming Francis Webb Ltd in 1907. The company specialised in high quality small silver items such as sewing accessories, smoking accessories, napkin rings and desk accessories. They remained in business until the early 1930s.

Condition is good, with just a few little dings and the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate from an item that has probably spent most of its life in a sewing box or basket. The lid shuts securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The needle case is 6.1cm / 2.4ins long and 1.1cm / 0.43ins in diameter. It weighs in at 5.2g / 0.18oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the side of the case, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter q for 1915 and the F.W makers' mark for Francis Webb Ltd.
