Description

This is a handsome large George V Silver Plate Six Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has an oblong base with rounded ends which stands on four bun feet. The dividers are cottage loaf shaped and the ring handle is circular. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The toast rack was made in Sheffield by famous silversmiths Walker & Hall and dates to 1919. Walker & Hall are one of the great names of English silverware. The firm was founded by George Walker in 1845 with Henry Hall joining in 1853 to form Walker & Hall. Hugely successful and very highly regarded they remained in business until they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.

Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 105 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The toast rack is of substantial size measuring 17.3cm / 6.8ins by 10.4cm / 4ins across the base and standing 14.3cm / 5.6ins high. It weighs 345g / 12.1oz.

The underside of the base is stamped A1 for the best quality silver plate and has the famous W & H in a pennant makers' mark for Walker & Hall above their date letter a for 1919. At the other end it has the retail stamp for Walker & Hall, Sheffield and is also stamped Warranted Hard & Silver Soldered, another mark of good quality.
