Art Nouveau Silver Plate Claret Jug, W.M.F 1903-10

Description
Here we have an elegant Art Nouveau or Jugendstil Silver Plate Claret Jug from the first decade of the 20th century. This beautiful jug has an exquisite sinuous floral design on each side and around the top of the lid. It stands on four spreading bracket feet. The jug is in the "Antique Silver" finish that was very popular in the Art Nouveau period. The jug is made of pewter and then silver plated. The silver is then deliberately darkened by oxidisation to create the impression of age. These items should not be robustly polished to remove this oxidisation as this will detract from the aesthetic quality of the piece.
The claret jug was made in Germany by the famous firm W.M.F and dates to between 1903 and 1910. WMF (Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik) was founded in 1880 when Straub & Sohn of Geislingen merged with Ritter & Co of Esslingen. The company was quickly successful and by 1910 was the largest employer in Wurttemberg and had offices in London, Vienna and Warsaw. They were very associated with Art Nouveau / Jugendstil style in silver plate and pewter. The company is still going strong today.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 115 years or more of use. The hinge on the lid works perfectly and the lid sits flush on the body. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug stands 30.2cm / 11.9ins high, is 15cm / 5.9ins from lip to handle and 15cm / 5.9ins across the base. It weighs 1.06kg / 37.46oz.
The underside of the base is stamped I/O to show that it is silver plate, AS for "antique silver" to show that it is deliberately darkened, B to show that the base metal is Britannia Metal or Pewter and the ostrich over the letters W M F in the style that shows that it is made by W.M.F in the period 1903-10.
Shipping in the UK is £17.00 by Royal Mail Special Deivery, which includes cover for the weight and value of the claret jug.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
