19th C. Silver Plate Sardine Fork, W.M.F, c.1880s

Description
This is a good quality late 19th Century Silver Plate Sardine Fork. The fork has a broad four pronged head, a twisted stem and a beautifully modelled sardine finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The fork was made in Germany by W.M.F and dates to around 1880-86. W.M.F (Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik) was founded in 1880 when Straub & Sohn of Geislingen merged with Ritter & Co of Esslingen. The company was quickly successful and by 1910 was the largest employer in Wurttemberg and had offices in London, Vienna and Warsaw. They were very associated with Art Nouveau / Jugendstil style in silver plate and pewter. In the late 1920s they launched Ikora, a revolutionary type of plating that gave an enhanced finish. The company is still going strong today.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sardine fork is 13.7cm / 5.4ins long and 3.6cm / 1.4ins wide across the head. It weighs 24.8g / 0.87oz.
The underside of the head is stamped with the early W M F mark, giving us our date of 1880-86, along with 90 and 15 showing that it is good quality silver plate.
