Description

This is a lovely George III Sterling Silver scoop style caddy spoon with a turned wooden handle. The caddy spoon was made in Birmingham by Cocks & Bettridge and dates to 1801. Cocks & Bettridge first registered their mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1796 but no pieces earlier than this spoon (1801) are known to have survived. They continued in business up until around 1817 but their mark is rarely seen making this a good caddy spoon for collectors.

The spoon is in the scoop style which was popular in the late 18th century but started to disappear quite quickly in the 1800s. The wooden handle is nicely turned and securely fitted into the back of the scoop.

Condition is good with no splits and only the regular wear you would expect of an item nearly 220 years old. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 10cm / 4" long and weighs 6.8g / 0.24oz including the wooden handle.

Being in the bottom of the scoop the hallmarks are inevitably a little worn but remain easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "d" for 1801, the George III duty mark and the C&B makers' mark for Cocks & Bettridge.
