Description

This is a distinctive Vintage Sterling Silver Napkin Ring from the 1960s. The napkin ring is oval with line decoration at the top and bottom and a raised band of Celtic decoration around the middle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The napkin ring was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1965. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The Mappin & Webb brand name remains a byword for quality and style to this day.

Condition is good, with no dings or dents, just a slight misshaping to the oval and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The oval napkin ring is 4.3cm / 1.7ins long, 3.6cm / 1.4ins wide and 2.6cm / 1in deep. It weighs in at a respectable 26.2g / 0.92oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter Q for 1965 and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb.
