Description

This is an attractive and unusual Victorian Sterling Silver Long Handled Spoon with a Gilded bowl. The top of the stem is in King's shape but is decorated with a spray of leaves with the letter B engraved below these. The bowl is shell shaped with a gilt interior. This could either be a long handled caddy spoon or a jam spoon or possibly something else altogether.

The spoon was made in Exeter by the firm of Edward Osment and dates to 1859. Edward Osment was a specialist spoon and flatware maker based in Exeter. He was active from the late 1840s through to his death in 1857. His brother Philip continued the business using the same mark into the early 1860s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding and just the overall superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 165 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 15.1cm / 5.9ins long and 3.9cm / 1.5ins across the bowl. It weighs in at 18.1g / 0.64oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter C for 1859, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the E O makers' mark for Edward Osment.
