Here we have a striking Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver Photo Frame from the Edwardian era. The frame has a visible picture size of 5.75ins by 3.75ins. The frame has a planished or hammered finish, with a scroll rim and a shell motif at the top. The easel back is covered in dark blue velvet.

The photo frame was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1904. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. The back access panel has warped very slightly but the strut and hinge are in good working order and it remains fully functional. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The frame is 19.7cm / 7.75ins by 13.8cm / 5.4ins and 15cm / 5.9ins deep with the strut fully extended. It weighs 214.7g / 7.57oz.

The hallmarks, on the bottom rim of the frame, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter e for 1904 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
