Description

This is an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Table Lighter. The lighter is shaped as an urn with arching scroll handles to either side. The wick is fed through a small nozzle, which can be removed to top up the lighter with spirit.

Table lighters such as this were used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily for gentlemen to light their cigars from.

The table lighter was made in Birmingham by highly regarded silversmiths A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1907. The firm was founded by brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman in Birmingham in 1879, operating from premises at Regent Place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They later opened a second premises and a showroom in London. The firm produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality up until they ceased trading around 1930.

Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The table lighter is 9cm / 3.5ins from handle to handle, 4.3cm / 1.7ins across the body and stands 7cm / 2.7ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 47.6g / 1.68oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the base of the lighter, are nice and clear to read apart from the makers' mark which is a little rubbed but still identifiable. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter h for 1907 and the A & J Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman.
