Description

This is an elegant Pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Egg Cups. Each cup stands on three hoof feet and has three beaded scrolling handles. The interiors of the cups are gilded and each cup has a monogram of the letters W S on the front.

The egg cups were made in London by renowned silversmiths Wakely & Wheeler and date to 1892. The firm dated back to silversmith John Lias in 1791. He was joined by his two sons Henry & Charles and later Henry's son Henry Jnr joined the partnership. In 1878 James Wakely joined Henry Lias Jnr and after Henry's retirement he was replaced by Frank Wheeler to form Wakely & Wheeler. They remained in business up until 1957.

Condition is good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each egg cup is 5.8cm / 2.3ins from handle to handle, 4.5cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 4.5cm / 1.8ins high. The pair together weighs in at a very respectable 78.8g / 2.78oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, just above the monograms, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter R for 1892 and the J.W over F.C.W makers' mark for James Wakely and Frank Clarke Wheeler.
