Description

This is an attractive George V Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The case is oblong with a curved back to fit comfortably into a pocket. The body of the case has chased acanthus leaf decoration to front and back with a blank circular cartouche on the front. The interior of the case is gilded.

The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by Constantine & Floyd Ltd and dates to 1913. Alfred Constantine and William Henry Floyd registered their mark in Birmingham in 1880 and later registered marks in both Chester and London. They were jewellers and silversmiths and produced many small items of silverware, primarily for personal use. They became a limited company in 1900 and opened a showroom in London’s prestigious Hatton Garden district. The firm was bought by Henry Williamson in 1931.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 110 years of use. The hinge and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cigarette case measures 7.7cm / 3ins by 5cm / 1.9ins and is 1cm / 0.39ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 51.2g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter o for 1913 and the Ce & Fd Ld makers' mark for Constantine & Floyd Ltd.
