Description

This is a smart George III Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The top of the stem is elegantly engraved with the initials GS and JS above the year 1797, suggesting that this was probably a wedding gift in that year.

The table spoon was made in Exeter by silversmith Richard Ferris and dates to 1796. Richard Ferris was active in the city of Exeter from the mid 1780s through to the 1810s, and possibly a little later. He was primarily a spoon maker but did also make occasional pieces of tableware. All his work is of consistently good quality.

Condition is very good, with no wear to the tip of the spoon and just minimal superficial surface wear, suggesting that this has been kept as a treasured gift and heirloom rather than seeing a great deal of use over the last 229 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The table spoon is 22.5cm / 8.8ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 70.0g / 2.47oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are somewhat rubbed from many years of polishing but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter y for 1796, the George III duty mark and the R F makers' mark for Richard Ferris.

Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoon.
