Description

Here we have a fine quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Mounted Meerschaum Pipe. The pipe is in the Calabash shape, often associated with Sherlock Holmes, and has a silver collar and a broad silver rim on the top of the bowl.

The pipe was made for Singleton & Cole Ltd and assayed in Birmingham in 1910. The firm was founded in 1866 by brothers-in-law John Singleton and Joseph Cole and was primarily a tobacco company based in Wolverhampton. In the early years of the 20th century they commissioned silver smoking accessories to run alongside their tobacco business.

The pipe is in very good condition. The meerschaum has acquired a beautiful deep amber coloured patina through years of being smoked and the silver rim and collar are securely attached. Overall there is just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pipe measures 13.5cm / 5.3ins from rim to mouthpiece, the bowl is 5.2cm / 2ins in diameter and the pipe is 10.1cm / 3.9ins high. It weighs 71.4g / 2.5oz.

The hallmarks, on the upper side of the rim and around the collar, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham the date letter l for 1910 and the G W S over J C makers' mark for Singleton & Cole Ltd.
