Description

This is an attractrive Set of Six Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Buttons from the Edwardian era. The buttons are circular with a pierced design of flowers and foliage.

The buttons were made by James Deakin & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1901. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.

Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage, just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each button is 1.5cm / 0.59ins in diameter and the set of six together weighs in at 7.5g / 0.26oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the fronts of the buttons, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter A for 1901 and the J D over W D makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
