Description

This is a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Pin Cushion in the form of a shoe. The shoe is of Georgian style with two bow fastenings on the front. The pin cushion is covered in rose pink velvet.

The pin cushion was made in Birmingham by Saunders & Shepherd and dates to 1896. Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd began their partnership in London’s Holborn Circus district in 1878. This was a major centre for silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers for many years in the 19th and 20th centuries. The firm were both manufacturers and retailers, specialising in small silver items for personal or domestic use and registered marks in London, Birmingham, Chester and Sheffield. The company remained in business up until the late 1930s.

Condition is good, with no splits, just a couple of tiny dings in the silver and the overall superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The shoe is 6.3cm / 2.5ins long, 1.5cm / 0.59ins wide and stands 2.3cm / 0.9ins high. It weighs in at 7.2g / 0.25oz.

The hallmarks, on the side of the shoe, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter w for 1896 and the distinctive C S and F S either side of a star makers' mark for Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd.
