Here we have an unusual Victorian Sterling Silver Sliding Pocket Photo Frame. The frame is oblong and curved to fit comfortably into a pocket. It holds two pictures, each 1.25ins square, which are revealed by moving the slider button to either left or right. The rest of the time they are protected inside the cover.

The photo frame was made in Sheffield by William Neale & Son and dates to 1897. The firm was founded by William Neale in Birmingham in 1862 and registered marks in Birmingham, Sheffield and Chester. They became William Neale & Son in 1890. The company produced a very wide range of silverware from trophies to tea services and cigarette boxes to pencils and were highly successful. They remained in business into the mid 1960s.

Condition is very good, with just one very shallow ding to the back of the case plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of good service, most of it probably spent in a pocket. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

When closed, the frame measures 7.8cm / 3ins by 4.2cm / 1.6ins and it weighs in at 47.1g / 1.6oz.

The hallmarks, at one end of the front of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter e for 1897 and the W N makers' mark for William Neale & Son.
