Description

This is a good quality Victorian Irish Sterling Silver Mustard Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon has a crest of a Wyvern engraved at the top of the stem, which is used by the Croker family of Ireland.

The mustard spoon was made in Dublin by West & Son and dates to 1890. The firm claimed to have been established in 1720, however Matthew West registered his mark at the Dublin assay office around 1765. He would become one of the most renowned Dublin silversmiths and Master of the Company of Goldsmiths. The firm became West & Son around 1877 and remained in business right up until 2010, although latterly just as retailers.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 135 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 11.6cm / 4.5ins long and weighs in at 12.1g / 0.43oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the crowned harp for Irish Sterling Silver, the Hibernia assay mark for Dublin, the date letter U for 1890 and the WEST & SON makers' mark.
