This is an attractive George V Sterling Silver Mounted Lucifer. Lucifers were designed to work as match holders with the ribbed glass acting as the striker. This one is spherical with a flat base, a ribbed body and a well in the centre to hold the matches with a silver rim around it.

The lucifer was made in London by Henry Perkins & Sons and dates to 1913. Based in Tottenham Court Road from 1901, the firm specialised in silver mounted glassware such as perfume bottles, dressing table jars and vases and also silver mounted pipes, cheroot and cigarette holders and other smoking paraphernalia. They remained in business into the early 1930s.

Condition is good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a few dings in the silver collar, which you would anticipate after over 110 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The lucifer is 6.2cm / 2.4ins in diameter and stands 5.5cm / 2.1ins high. It weighs 349.7g / 12.3oz.

The hallmarks on the silver collar are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter s for 1913 and the H.P.& S makers' mark for Henry Perkins & Sons.
