Description

This is a very attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the rococo revival style with a beautifully decorated stem. The spoon is made in Birmingham by William Devenport and dates to 1899. William Devenport began producing a wide range of silver items in Birmingham in the early 1890s, carrying on until the early 1930s and then the firm bearing his name continued on until around 1950.

This is a very nicely made salt spoon and it is unusual to see more decorative ones from the late Victorian era. It would make a great addition to a collection or be a very decorative spoon to use on the dining table today.

The spoon is in very good condition with no dings or dents and only the most superficial surface wear, which can only be expected after over 120 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoon is 6.6cm / 2.5" long and weighs 4.3g / 0.15oz.

The hallmarks on the underside of the bowl are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "z" for 1899 and the WD makers' mark for William Devenport.
