Description

This is a smart late Victorian Sterling Silver Desktop Stamp Holder. The holder is a trough shaped as a half barrel standing on four ball feet. The hinged lid has three windows and there are three corresponding compartments in the gilded interior.

The stamp holder was made in Birmingham by W.H. Tandy & Sons and dates to 1898. William Harry Tandy was a master jeweller operating from premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. He founded his firm in the early 1890s and it passed through the family into the late 1950s. They primarily produced jewellery, which was almost exclusively assayed in Chester, but also made small items of silverware, which were mostly assayed in Birmingham.

The stamp holder has certainly seen some use and has a few small dings around the body. The four feet have pushed into the body a little down the years but it stands on a flat surface without rocking. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The stamp holder is 8.8cm / 3.5ins wide, 3.5cm / 1.4ins deep and 2.4cm / 0.94ins high. It weighs in at 50.2g / 1.77oz.

The hallmarks, on one end of the stamp holder, are somewhat rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter y for 1898 and the T & S makers' mark for W.H. Tandy & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the stamp holder.
