Description

This is a good quality pair of George V Sterling Silver Salts in a cauldron style. The salts are made in London by Wakely & Wheeler and date to 1911. James Wakely & Frank Wheeler's partnership was the successor company to H.J. Lias & Co, operating under their own names from 1884. They were based in London's famous Hatton Garden and produced very high end pieces for wealthy and aristocratic customers. They were finally bought out in 1958.

This pair of cauldron salts have a wavy rim and stand on three lion's paw feet. They have an armorial crest of an arm holding a dagger on the side of each salt and a letter "H" engraved on the base. They are very well made pieces in a good gauge of silver and would work perfectly for salt or other condiments today or would be a great addition to any collection.

The salts are in very good condition with no dings or dents and only the minimal wear you would expect after nearly 110 years of use. They stand securely on a flat surface with no wobbling. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salts are each 4.5cm / 1.75" in diameter and stand 3.8cm / 1.4" high. The pair together weigh a substantial 68.7g / 2.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the side of each salt are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "q" for 1911 and the W&W makers' mark for Wakely & Wheeler.
