Victorian Cigar Humidor, Maple & Co, c.1895

Description
Here we have a fine quality late Victorian Brass Mounted Wooden Cigar Humidor. The box is made of oak with a cedar wood lining to keep the cigars fresh. The top has a box for storing matches, two strike plates, a cigar cutter and a tray for catching the cut ends and used matches. This top section rotates through 90 degrees to unlock the two storage sections with lids that open upwards and outwards. The box was made by renowned furniture makers Maple & Co of Tottenham Court Road, London and dates to around 1895. The company was founded by John Maple in 1841 and became one of the foremost suppliers and makers of furniture and household items to the upper echelons of British society and many European Royal houses, particularly in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
The box has a Registered Design No of 223291 on the top section, which dates to design to 1894. In addition when we acquired the box the baize on the underside had come away to reveal newspaper padding below dated 1895. We have reattached the original baize and left the Victorian newspaper in situ.
Condition is very good with just a couple of little chips to the two back corners of the base. The cedar wood lining is all intact. The hinges and opening mechanism are in good order as is the cigar cutter. The top section would have originally locked in place but unfortunately the key has gone missing at some point in time, however it does still close securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The humidor is 33cm / 13ins wide, 19cm / 7.5ins deep and stands 17cm / 6.7ins high. It weighs in at 2.09kg / 73.7oz.
The front of the box has a brass plaque saying Maple & Co, Tottenham Court Rd.
Shipping in the UK is £22 by Royal Mail Special Delivery which covers the weight and the value of the humidor.
