Description

This is a stylish Cased Mid-Century Sterling Silver 3 Piece Condiment Set with its original salt and mustard spoons. The three pieces have tapering bodies on circular bases with turned finials on the pepper shaker and the mustard pot. The salt and the mustard have blue plastic liners, which are common in pieces from the 1960s and 70s. The spoons are in the Old English pattern. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The condiment set was made in Birmingham by noted silversmiths Joseph Gloster Ltd and dates to 1965. Joseph Gloster registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1888 and set up business at the Lion Silver Works. The firm produced a very wide range of silverware and were quickly successful, becoming Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1901. They remained in business up until around 1980.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and no damage to the blue plastic liners. There is a little salt spotting on the inside of the salt and mustard but this isn't visible when the liners are in situ. The box, which has a black velvet tray and a white satin lining, is in good condition with the hinges and clasps in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt is 3.8cm / 1.5ins high and 3.8cm / 1.5ins in diameter. The pepper shaker is 7.5cm / 2.9ins high and 3.3cm / 1.3ins in diameter. The mustard pot is 5.3cm / 2.1ins high and 3.8cm / 1.5ins in diameter. Without the liners, the set weighs in at a substantial 105.8g / 3.7oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in the cased set weighs 374g / 13.2oz.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases and the stems of the spoons, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter Q for 1965 and the J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
