Description

Here we have a large George III Sterling Silver Soup Ladle in the classic Old English pattern. The ladle has the initials H H elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The soup ladle was made in London by silversmith William Ellerby and dates to 1808. William Ellerby registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1802. He classed himself as a smallworker and his mark has been seen on spoons and flatware, salts, pepper shakers, decanter labels and other small items. He remained in business into the 1820s and possibly a little later.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 215 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The ladle is 31.3cm / 12.3ins long and 10cm / 3.9ins across the bowl. It weighs in at a substantial 161.8g / 5.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter N for 1808, the George III duty mark and the W E makers' mark for William Ellerby.

Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the soup ladle.
