Description

This is a fine quality Cased Set of George V Silver Plate Fish Servers. The servers have silver plated uppers, Sterling Silver ferrules or collars and ivorine handles. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The fish servers were made in Sheffield by James A Scholes and date to 1923. James Albert Scholes registered his mark at the Sheffield assay office in 1898. He was a cutler, electroplater and silversmith who is particularly known for his fish serving sets and fish eaters. He made huge numbers of ferrules for both his own production and that of many other cutlers in Sheffield. He ceased trading in the late 1920s.

Condition is very good, with just a small amount of plate loss on the underside of the fork where it rests on the table plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The knife is 27.5cm / 10.8ins long and the fork is 23.5cm / 9.2ins long. The pair together, unboxed, weighs in at 176.5g / 6.2oz and the boxed set weighs 532g / 18.7oz.

The hallmarks on the ferrules are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter f for 1923 and the J.A.S makers' mark for James Albert Scholes.
