Description

This is an intricate Edwardian Sterling Silver Photo Frame with a circular visible picture display of 2.75ins diameter. The overall frame is square with an easel back covered in purple velvet. The silver front is decorated with scrolls, flowers and foliage and has a small blank cartouche at the top.

The frame was made in Birmingham by Marks & Cohen and dates to 1903. The firm was established in Birmingham by Walter H Marks and Samuel T Cohen (sometimes written Cohn) around about 1900. They produced an extensive range of good quality silverware for domestic and personal use and had marks registered in both Birmingham and Chester. They ceased trading in the mid 1920s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. There is some wear to the velvet backing as you would anticipate but the strut and hinged back are in good order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Overall, the frame is 12cm / 4.7ins square with just a slight extra rise in the middle of the top. With the strut fully opened it is 9.5cm / 3.7ins deep and it weighs in at 121.5g / 4.28oz.

The hallmarks, at the top of the frame, are nice and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the M & C makers' mark for Marks & Cohen.
