Art Deco Silver Card Case, Chester, 1936
Description
Here we have a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Card Case. The card case is oblong with all over engine turned decoration, a hinged lid and a gilt interior. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The card case was made by E.J. Treveitt & Sons of Birmingham and assayed in Chester in 1936. E.J. Trevitt & Sons was founded in Birmingham in 1900 and operated from premises in the Jewellery Quarter. Although Birmingham based the vast majority of their pieces were assayed in Chester. They specialised in small items for personal use of which they produced a broad range of designs and styles. They remained in business into the 1940s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would anticpate after over 85 years of good service. The hinge is in good working order and the lid closes securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The card case is 8.3cm / 3.2ins by 4.6cm / 1.8ins and 0.9cm / 0.35ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 47.6g / 1.68oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the case, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter L for 1936 and the T & S makers' mark for E.J. Trevitt & Sons. In addition the outside of the lid is stamped with the lion passant and the date letter L.
