Description

This is a top quality Vintage Sterling Silver Powder Compact with a light gold coloured wash over the silver. The compact is circular with engine turned decoration and a central oblong blank cartouche.

On opening, the compact has a mirror in the lid and a striped inner cover to make sure no powder escapes. It still retains its original removable mesh over the powder compartment.

The compact was made in London by the renowned firm KIGU of London and dates to 1965. KIGU began life in Budapest, Hungary when Gustav Kiaschek took the first two letters of his last and first names to create KI-GU. His youngest son, George, moved to London in the late 1930s and founded KIGU of London. During the heyday of powder compacts in the 1940s, 50s & 60s, KIGU were one of the most famous names and created many different designs in a wide variety of materials. In the early eighties the brand was sold and is now part of a group that also contains Stratton and Mascot.

Condition is very good, with just some rubbing to the outside back of the compact plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. The mirror is in very good condition and the hinges, clasp and interior slider are all in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The compact is 6cm / 2.36ins in diameter and weighs in at 69.0g / 2.4oz.

The inner cover is stamped with the famous KIGU triangular logo and the inner rim of the base has the hallmarks which show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter k for 1965 and the K Ld makers' mark for KIGU of London Ltd.
