Description

Here we have an elegant George V Sterling Silver Vase from the 1920s. The vase has a circular base, weighted for stability, with a raised scalloped line of decoration. The body of the vase is trumpet shaped with a scalloped top rim.

The vase was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1921. The firm was founded by brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman in Birmingham in 1879, operating from premises at Regent Place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They later opened a second premises and a showroom in London. The firm produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality up until they ceased trading around 1930.

Condition is very good with just a few tiny dings in the body and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The vase stands 17.6cm / 6.9ins high and is 8.9cm / 3.5ins in diameter across the top rim. It weighs in at 220.7g / 7.78oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.

The hallmarks, on the upper side of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter w for 1921 and the distinctive A & J Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman. In addition there is a registered design number of 685296, which also dates the original design to 1921.
