Description

This is an elegant Georgian Sterling Silver Salt Shovel in the Hanoverian pattern from the middle years of the 18th century. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The salt shovel is bottom marked. This term means that the spoon was made and then sent to the assay office to be hallmarked, which was done at the bottom of the stem. This widened the stem, so that when it was returned to the maker it would be hammered back into shape, which in turn distorted the hallmarks. In keeping with the standard practice in the 1750s and 1760s, this salt shovel was bottom marked with just the lion passant for Sterling Silver and the makers' mark, both of which are distorted and rubbed by polishing.

Condition is very good, with no salt corrosion, no dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after around 250 years or more of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt shovel is 8.7cm / 3.4ins long and weighs in at 6.4g / 0.22oz of solid Sterling Silver.
