Description

Here we have a superb quality large Pair of Victorian Silver Plate Candlesticks. The candlesticks have scalloped round bases, weighted for stability and decorated with shells and scrolls. The tapered, fluted stems rise from a low knop and are topped by fluted urn shaped sconces with removable nozzles.

The candlesticks were made in Sheffield by Creswick & Co and date to around the 1870s/80s. The firm was founded by brothers Thomas, James & Nathaniel Creswick in Sheffield at the start of the 19th century. Their trademark of a grid formed by crossed arrows was registered in 1811 and originally used on their Old Sheffield Plate production. They started electroplating in 1852, becoming Creswick & Co in 1855. The company was bought by William Hutton & Sons in 1902.

Condition is very good, with no significant plate loss, just a couple of truly tiny dings, a slight tilt on one nozzle and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all of the photographs.

The candlesticks are of a substantial size, standing 29.3cm / 11.5ins high, 14.8cm / 5.8ins in diameter and weighing in at a hefty 3.33kg / 117.5oz.

The candlesticks are marked inside the sconces with the grid of crossed arows trademark of Creswick & Co.

Shipping in the UK is £20 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which covers the value of the candlesticks and their substantial weight.
